Out with the old…

…and in with the grown-up furniture – at last!

Our new desk was delivered today. Ain’t she a beaut? Lucky for us, one of the area Ethan Allen stores was closing and had a “liquidation” sale (as much as EA could have a sale). A new desk has been on our list for quite a while, so we were thrilled to find this lovely piece.

And here’s why. The desk we have owned for more than thirteen years has long passed its peak. Michael bought before he started medical school, and it served us well for four years of med school, one year of internship, three years of residency, one year of fellowship, and four years of practice. But fiberboard (or “plood,” as Gretchen lovingly calls it) can only last so long.

missing drawer:

drawer fallen off its track:
plastic strip completely gone:
plastic strip falling off and held onto the desk with clear packing tape:
(oh, loveliness!)

When we moved from Iowa, I refused to allow a similar entertainment center into our new house. Michael bought that at a garage sale during college, and by the time he finally finished his training, I swear to you, Goodwill would not take it. I really wanted to take a sledgehammer to it (using protective eyewear, of course), but Michael put his foot down. Gretchen’s dad eventually had to leave it on the side of the road somewhere in Indiana.

I may revisit the sledgehammer idea – it could do me a lot of good. Stress relief, y’know. Otherwise, we may have to disassemble it in large parts and put it out for Bulk Trash Day.

I’m still holding out for the sledgehammer.

  1. Out with the plood and in with the wood! Hurray! There is just something to be said for natural materials! It is beautiful! It is worthy of a prominent space in this home and the next. Don’t you feel all grown up!

what do you think?
